F-Roads in Iceland

F-Roads in Iceland

One of the best ways of navigating around Iceland is to drive. Rent a car in Iceland and you can take your pick of the spectacular sights, travelling across the landscape in your own time rather than being bound to tour groups and organised trips.

Driving in Iceland is one of the most extraordinary experiences in travel, but the rugged local landscape can be difficult to navigate. Because of this, there are plenty of hazards you should be aware of, and rules that you need to familiarise yourself with.

One thing you should be well informed about is the types of road, including F-roads.

F-Roads in Iceland

F-roads are the roads that journey across the highlands of Iceland. They are mountain roads, and they are effected by seasonal changes and closures depending on the weather conditions.

What vehicle do I need to drive on F-roads?

F-roads are unpaved tracks that are subject to many changes. Many of them aren't maintained, and so they can be filled with holes and large rocks. Some of them even cross through rivers. For this reason, you can only drive on F-roads in a 4x4 vehicle. If you want to drive during your visit and see the spectacular highlands, it is recommended that you opt for 4x4 rental car in Iceland.

The main F-roads and their average opening dates each year are listed below. Due to Iceland's unpredictable weather, F-roads can even close during the summer. Call the number +354-1777 for updates and information in English.
